The owner

For whom the Bell tolls.

Michael Bell, owner of Hunky Dory Records, in front of red rock cliffs

Michael Bell grew up in Raleigh and spent years as an award-winning newspaper journalist across the Southeast. His work took him to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and into the economic hardship in Alabama.

He liked the work. He also wanted to bring his wife and dog home to North Carolina and run a small business of his own. Hunky Dory has been well received since day one.

Bell is still the one out hunting. He drives thousands of miles a year to dusty sheds, damp basements and dirty garages, looking for records.
